Hello, Garden Gals and Guys!!  I’m excited about what’s going on in my backyard garden!  You remember that I planted potatoes, right?  Well after two weeks I saw no hints of sprouting and I thought maybe the potato crop was going to be a bust.  Well, I hadn’t been out in the garden for about a week because it was kind of rainy and cold.
Well, I went in there this past Saturday and saw this:
And there were about six or seven of them!  Most of them still too small to worry about hilling….all except for this one:
This one was about three inches tall.  It’s hard to tell, but this one is “hilled”.  Meaning that I took dirt from around it and hilled it up around the stem.  I will continue to do this every time the plant gets a few inches higher.  The potatoes will actually form in the soil that you hill around the stem of the plant, which is why hilling them is so important!
The strawberry patch is doing well, too!  I must have close to 100 strawberries out there!!! And here is one that is starting to get red:
MMMMMM!!!!!!!  This weekend I also decided to plant some Austrian Peas.  They are a great green manure for the soil.  You grow them and then till them back into the soil (that’s why it’s called green manure…..you didn’t really think it was manure, did you?) to add nutrients to the soil.  But they have a really wonderful taste and go great in a salad….which is why I am growing them.
I also planted some spinach seeds. OK. Now here’s the best part of my weekend. I was working on something that is going to be really AWESOME!!! I’ll be sure to post about it next week.  But in the mean time, here’s a hint:  the excitement is building.
What do you think it is?  Leave a comment with your guess and then be sure to come back next week to find out what the surprise is!
Until next time garden gals and guys….
Happy gardening!!!!
